NFPA 80/101 Guide

NFPA 80/101 Reference for Fire Door Teams.

Use this guide to align inspection preparation, understand deficiency scope, and ensure your documentation meets the standard before the inspector arrives.

Scope & Identification

  • Identify all rated openings in occupied, egress, and back-of-house areas
  • Confirm fire-rating labels are present, legible, and unobstructed on each opening
  • Verify door, frame, and hardware are compatible with the listed assembly rating
  • Flag unapproved modifications—field cuts, non-listed components, added glass—as immediate deficiencies
  • Assign a unique opening number or room reference for tracking through the inspection cycle

Inspection Focus Areas

  • Self-closing operation: door must close and latch fully from the open position without manual assistance
  • Gap clearances: undercut, top, and side clearances per current NFPA 80 allowances
  • Latching and strike alignment: positive latch engagement required under NFPA 80
  • Hardware condition: hinges, closers, exit devices, and seals must be undamaged and operational
  • Coordinator and astragal function on pair openings; proper sequencing required

Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Maintain a dated opening-by-opening inspection record for each building and fire-barrier zone
  • Record deficiencies with location reference, deficiency type, and severity classification
  • Track corrective actions from identified deficiency through verified completion
  • Store completed inspection records for a minimum of one inspection cycle and make available to AHJ on request
  • Re-inspect corrected openings and document closure before removing from the open deficiency list
